Holiday Loyalty Promotions for Small Shops: A November–January Plan

The holiday season brings the busiest weeks of the year and a crowd of new faces. A loyalty card in your customers' Wallet turns that rush into regulars who come back in January, without an ad budget.

Updated for 2026·November to January

Most small shops treat the holidays as a sprint: decorate, stock up, survive December. The shops that come out ahead also use those weeks to sign up new customers and to give regulars a reason to choose them over the chain down the street. None of it needs a big campaign. It needs four small moves timed right, and a fifth one in January when everyone else goes quiet.

Early November: dress the card for the season

Change the banner on your loyalty card to something seasonal: your window display, the holiday menu, a photo of the gift boxes. In Pikarta every card your customers already saved updates automatically, so the new look reaches every Wallet within minutes and nobody has to download anything again. See how to change the card design.

Plan the switch back too. The same banner in February looks like a shop that forgot to take down the lights.

Late November: a coupon for the people who already come

Black Friday weekend is when big retailers shout the loudest. Your answer is quieter and more personal: a coupon that goes straight to your regulars' cards and shows up on their lock screen. Pikarta coupons come in three kinds: a free item, a percent off or a fixed amount off. You can set a minimum purchase, pick who gets it and choose the last day it works.

  • "Free hot chocolate with any pastry, until Sunday" — a free item for everyone on the card.
  • "15% off gift sets over $40" — percent off with a minimum purchase, so it lifts the basket instead of shrinking it.
  • "$5 off your next visit" — a fixed amount for customers who are close to their reward.

Set it up before the rush. The trial is 30 days, no card details needed to start.

December: sign up the holiday crowd at the counter

December brings people who have never been in before: gift shoppers, visiting family, office parties. Each of them is a future regular, if they leave with your card. Put a table tent with your QR code next to the register and post a story with the same code; Pikarta generates both in the app. Joining takes a scan, a name and a phone number, with no app to install. All season: a reminder when they walk past

If you add your shop's address, the card can surface on the customer's iPhone lock screen when they are nearby, with a short line you write yourself (up to 80 characters, one per location, up to 10 locations). In the holidays that line can do real work. Google Wallet shows its own standard nearby notification. Details in locations and reminders.

  • "Gingerbread is back. Your stamp card is ready."
  • "Gift wrapping is free this week."
  • "Open until 9 pm through Christmas."

January: bring the December newcomers back

January is the slowest month for many cafés, bakeries and shops, and it is exactly when the people who joined in December decide whether you were a one-off. Send a short message to customers who have not visited in 30 days, or to the ones who joined recently: one offer, one deadline. Pikarta delivers it through the card itself, so there are no SMS or emails to send.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Will changing the banner change cards customers already have?

Yes. Every card already saved in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet updates automatically. Customers don't need to scan or download anything again.

Do customers need to do anything to get a coupon?

No. The coupon is added to the card they already have, and iPhone users see it as a lock-screen notification. At the counter they show the card and you scan it.

Can I limit a coupon to bigger purchases?

Yes. Set a minimum purchase when you create the coupon, and choose the last day it can be used, from tomorrow up to a year ahead.

Does this work on Android?

Yes. Google Wallet cards get the same design changes and coupons. Nearby notifications on Android are shown by Google Wallet with its own standard text.
