How to Launch a QR Code Loyalty Program (No App Required)

A QR code loyalty program is the lowest-friction way to enroll a customer: one scan, the card lands in their phone wallet, done before they've paid. No app to download, no form to fill in, no password to invent.

Updated for 2026·Under 10 seconds per customer

Most loyalty programs lose customers at the join step, not the reward step. Ask someone to download an app for a single coffee shop and most will say no — one more icon, one more login, one more thing to delete later. Ask them to scan a code with the camera they already have open, and there's almost nothing to decline. That's the entire case for a QR code loyalty program: it replaces the download-and-signup step with a single scan, and the card lands directly in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, a screen they already unlock a dozen times a day.

How a QR code loyalty program works

The mechanics are short by design. There's one code, one scan, and no separate app for the customer at any point.

  1. You print one QR code

Generated once from your loyalty app and reused everywhere — the counter, a window sticker, a receipt. It never changes, so you print it once and forget it.

  2. The customer scans it with their camera

No dedicated scanner app needed — the native iPhone or Android camera reads it directly and opens a save prompt.

  3. The card saves to their wallet

One tap and it's in Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. The whole thing takes under 10 seconds at the counter.

  4. Every visit earns stamps, points or cashback

Staff scan the customer's Wallet card to log the visit — whichever mechanic you picked applies automatically.

  5. The card updates on its own

A new stamp, a closer reward, a seasonal banner change — it all pushes to the customer's phone in the background. They never open an app to check a balance.

Why QR beats an app-download loyalty program

The friction difference isn't subtle. A dedicated loyalty app asks a customer to find it in an app store, download it, wait for it to install, and create an account — for one shop. Most people abandon that chain somewhere in the middle, and the ones who finish it forget the app exists within a week. A QR code loyalty program skips every one of those steps. There's no password to invent, no signup form to type into on a phone keyboard, and no separate listing for a customer to search for by name after they've left the store.

It also works on both platforms without any extra decision on your part. The same code detects whether it's being scanned on an iPhone or an Android phone and routes accordingly — Apple Wallet for one, Google Wallet for the other. You're not choosing a platform or building two versions of anything, and you're not asking a customer which wallet they use before they can join. For the full comparison between a custom loyalty app and a Wallet-based card, see loyalty app vs Wallet card; for how the Android side of that specifically works, see Google Wallet loyalty cards.

There's also no password for the customer to forget between visits. A loyalty program without an app removes the single biggest reason people never make it back to redeem anything — they simply don't remember how to get in.

Where to place your QR code

The code doesn't move once it's generated, so placement is really the only ongoing decision. A few spots consistently outperform the rest:

  • At the register — the highest-traffic spot in the building; every customer passes it while paying.
  • Table tents — gives customers something to scan while they wait, not just on the way out.
  • On the receipt — printed or emailed, it reaches the customer after they've already decided to come back.
  • Storefront window — catches people who haven't come in yet, especially useful for walk-by traffic.
  • Packaging or takeout bags — reaches customers after they've left, when the code isn't competing with anything else for attention.
  • Instagram bio — turns a follow into a joined member without leaving the app they're already in.

It's the same code in every one of these places — you're not generating a new one per location, just printing or posting the same image wherever a customer already looks.

Common launch mistakes

Most QR code loyalty programs that underperform aren't broken — they're just set up in a way that quietly discourages the scan. The usual causes are small and fixable.

The code is too small or laminated with glare. A code that needs a customer to tilt their phone twice loses half of them before the camera even focuses. Print it large, matte, and at eye level.

Staff never mention it. A QR code sitting silently on the counter gets scanned far less often than one a cashier points to and says "scan this for a stamp." The code does the enrolling; staff still have to do the offering.

The first reward is too far away. If the first payoff takes 15 visits, most customers give up before they see it. Set the first reward reachable in 2 to 3 visits, then let later rewards take longer.

No test scan before printing. A code that's cropped, low-resolution, or printed at the wrong size can fail to scan at all. Test it with an actual phone camera before it goes on a hundred receipts.

It only targets one platform. A code that only saves to Apple Wallet quietly drops every Android customer at the counter — see Google Wallet loyalty cards for why that gap matters more than it looks.

Setting it up with Pikarta

Pikarta generates the QR code for you the moment you finish building the card — logo, colors, loyalty model and reward are set once in the app, and the code that comes out of it doesn't change afterward. It works the same whether you run a restaurant with table tents and a till, or a retail shop with a code by the register and one on every bag. Setup takes about 15 minutes, and there's a 30-day trial with no card details needed to start.

Once the code is printed, the only ongoing work is what's covered above: point it out at the counter, keep the first reward within reach, and check that it still scans cleanly if you ever reprint it at a different size.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do customers need to download an app?

No. The customer scans your QR code with their phone's camera and the card saves straight into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet — both already installed. There's nothing to download and no account to create.

Does one QR code work for both iPhone and Android?

Yes. The same code detects the phone and routes an iPhone customer to Apple Wallet and an Android customer to Google Wallet. You print one code, not two.

Can I put the same QR code in multiple places?

Yes. It's the same link no matter where it's printed — the register, a table tent, a receipt — so you can put it anywhere customers already look without generating a new code each time.

What if a customer deletes the card?

They scan the same QR code again and it saves a fresh copy. Their stamp or points balance is tied to their account on your side, not to the file on their phone, so nothing is lost.
